GB U20 Triathlete and Young Volunteer of the Year
John Cleveland Sixth Form student Harvey has qualified to represent GB in the U20 age group at the European Sprint Triathlon in Malmo next August, where he will face the top athletes from around Europe.
To reach the competition Harvey competed in three qualifying races throughout the year, where triathletes had to finish within 120% of the winner’s time and within the top 20 to secure a place, with Harvey achieving this in two out of three qualifiers.
The competition will see Harvey compete alongside around 20 other GB athletes and against tough competition from across Europe. Consisting of a 750m swim, 20k bike and a 5k run, it is not an event for the faint hearted and Harvey has already increased his training programme to ensure he is ready, now fitting in six training sessions a week around his studies and playing for the JC6 rugby team. "I’m focusing on bike training at the moment to improve my time," says Harvey, who says the 5k run as the hardest part about his event, "it’s the last part after you have already done a swim and a bike, so it’s definitely the hardest."
Harvey has competed in triathlons, alongside his brother Brad who also attended JC6, for six years, even introducing his brother to the sport after attending his local club. Competing in the same age group until recently, Harvey lists beating his brother as one of the highlights of taking part in triathlons, commenting, "we used to be really competitive until he moved up!" Both brothers can utilise this competitive streak in August as Brad has also qualified to compete at the event in the U25 age group.
"I am really looking forward to it, but I think I will be nervous on the day," Harvey said when thinking ahead to the day of the event. The winning athlete guarantees a place in following year’s race, otherwise competitors have to qualify again to return in 2021. Looking beyond next year, the Maths, Physics and PE student also has his sights set on a sporting career, "If I could make a career out of this that would be amazing, but otherwise I definitely want to do something sport related like Sports Science."
As well as qualifying for Malmo, Harvey has recently been named as 'Young Volunteer of the Year' by Triathlon England during a ceremony in November.
Everyone at JC6 are extremely proud of Harvey and Brad's achievements and are already looking forward to hearing how they get on next August!
